The Settler

Those people who have amazingly high ambitions, high expectations, dreams, hopes and desires…those people whom novels change the way they think, characters shape the way they speak.. Those people who make Rousseau and Montesquieu guide them every step of the way, deciding for their future plans, telling them they will become political scientists…

They get dazzled with a psychology course and decide to become psychologists, they get enchanted by Edith Piaf's voice and suddenly fall in love with French, they respect and admire what Ahmad Shugairi does for the people so they plan to volunteer in Uganda next year, they get amazed by "you've got mail" and decide they will own the corner bookshop one day…

Then something happens to their dreams, they graduate and hit a wall, they realize suddenly that life is a bit harder than what movies have indicated.. They settle a bit, they decide that French isn't really that important in their lives.
They can't quite find the job of their dreams, they settle again, they don't get to design or write now, they just review what others have done, "everyone is doing it" , why am I so different? They forget that they are really DIFFERENT! They settle again for an easy job!

"Life leaves us no time, what can I do?", they settle again , no volunteer work, no travel, no bonus on the extra hours they pull at the office they hate … Slaves of their own reality, settlers!
They settle one more time, get married without falling in love, they have kids without considering possibilities, they don't understand each other, They settle! And they settle again, until Rousseau and Shugairi become distant vague memories of a forgotten past , that disappears bit by bit till they can't remember if it was theirs.

They leave it, this world,  without a trace ! as if they were never here…

They settle.. and Die!

  1. To settle in an uncertainty is absolutely a folly unless one is comfortable freewheeling into interminable damnation such an insightful portrayal of a visceral truth. Thank You, more power n beauty.
